Cole Valley Fair will be back again for its 11th year on Sunday, September 29, 2013. The well-attended fair features local art and fine crafts, lip-smacking food, live music, a display of historical Cole Valley photographs, a full block of vintage automobiles owned by neighborhood residents, events for children, and more!

Artist with unique handcrafted work can apply for a booth space before the deadline July 1, 2013. Priority will be given to Cole Valley residents, returning vendors, and promising new applicants. (Imported merchandise will not be considered). Musicians from all genres and styles are encouraged to apply for one-hour performance slots. The Cole Valley Fair is a small and intimate street fair where the right sound will attract a lot of attention.

And, yes, Cars on Cole will be back again this year. Never been to the event? Interesting neighborhood vehicles accepted — whatever that may mean. It need not be a “show queen”, or vintage, or rare. The range of vehicles in past years has been from a gaggle of Citroen 2CV’s, British, German, French, Japanese and Italian sports and touring cars, heavy 30-60’s American Iron, Model A to modern Hot Rod, bicycles to motorcycles.

Application forms for vendors, musicians, and cars are available on www.midlinestudio.com/Cole_Valley_Fair.html. Food applications will be handled separately.

Last year, Christin from the Booksmith and several other community-minded small business owners made a list of ideas for a future Haight Street. A few of those ideas have already been put in motion: the addition of parklets, more bicycle parking, streetscaping including the addition of plants in many tree wells with help from a guerilla gardener or two. They also approached our Supervisor’s office about ideas for more permanent changes such as wider sidewalks and better pedestrian lighting (most of the street lights we have now are designed to light the road for cars). Additional ideas were for more street art and/or historic markers for important landmarks in the neighborhood (you probably know where the Grateful Dead lived, but did you know we used to have a water park, a baseball diamond, and a street car rail all here?) The good news is Supervisor Christina Olague and the Department of Planning have put together funds for the creation of a Public Realm Plan, the first step in a multi-year process to seek community input & make a plan for the future of Haight Street.

You are invited to the first Community Workshop to offer your input on what you’d like to see change (or not) about Haight Street.

What: Haight Ashbury Public Realm Plan, First Community Meeting facilitated by City Planner Alexis Smith
When: Wednesday, October 24th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM
Where: Urban School, 1563 Page Street, San Francisco
Questions: Alexis Smith (alexis.smith@sfgov.org; 415-575-9131; http://haightashbury.sfplanning.org)

If you have no patience: stick tattoo to the raw eggs. (Surprise your roommate when they open the fridge)
If you have some patience: stick tattoo to the hard boiled eggs. (Wow your coworkers at the lunch break)
If you have A LOT of patience: use a needle to poke two holes on opposite end of the eggshell. Blow the egg white and yolk out. Clean the eggs. Let dry. Then stick the tattoos on. (Permanent display and great gift!)

Larger, white eggs recommended.

How I wish we have this in Cole Valley! Cellist Hannah Addario-Berry organizes a wonderful cello event called Cello Bazzar(2012 is the 4th year!) at the Bazzar cafe on California Street @ 21st Avenue. Performers range from talented Conservatory students to seasoned professionals, playing everything from Bach and Beethoven to contemporary music (including local composers), jazz, and hiphop. While Cello Bazaar is a cello-centric event, the performances also feature collaborations with other instruments including violin, viola, piano, guitar, vocals, and more. More details here.

I went to their March 18th event, here’s the video of Hannah performing herself:

Cellist Sam Bass and the Canadian composer Stephen Brown only met for the first time for 2 hours before performing together here:

There are many other musicians too.

The event is free, but everybody was eager to fill the tip jar. Hey if you want to start a salon or would like to host some musicians in your home for a reasonable fee - give them a call. Hannah is well connected with other musicians. You can sit very close to the musicians with your friends instead of watching the performance from all the way in the back with hundreds of people.
