Three Entree Restaurant

adopt this dishadopt this dishadopt this dishpick two out of three!menu

I am recently selected by the San Francisco Arts Commission to do the “Art in Storefronts” project. On 630 Kearny Street, I converted an empty, vandalized storefront into a simulated Chinese restaurant offering only three entrees: 1. Cheap and good. (slow) 2. Cheap and fast. (crappy) 3. Good and fast (expensive). The special of the day, though, is Good and slow(I am growing dishes on site from the seeds!).

Passersby are invited to place orders through an intercom on site or grab a free menu on the door. All dishes are also available for adoption. I try to be there every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 12noon to 6pm. For other days of the week, reservations only :-) For more information and the concept behind this project, please visit NianaLiu.com. I will be featured on Eye on the Bay program on CBS5 on July 19th, 7pm.

There are also fresh roasted ducks for sale! Together with handmade ready to wear local SF fortune cookies, and Chinese clay pastries.

Good Luck to the Year of the Tiger!

NianaLiu Year of Tiger

Yawn. Alarm o’clock went off at 7:55am this morning. I’m determined to try my luck to call China at the busiest time of the year — 5 minutes before the arrival of the Year of the Tiger. There are hundreds and millions of people trying to do the same, and normally would take me more than an hour to get through.

Miraculously I got through immediately this time! Sudden blasts of fireworks from the other side of the phone almost blew me off the bed. Grandma shouted on top of her lung:”Can you hear the fireworks?! Can you hear them?!” “Yes yes” I talked so loud that the whole block could hear me, “I can hear nothing but fireworks, Grandma!”

Chinese New Year atmosphere is what I miss the most since I left China. Fireworks day after day, parties in the house and on the streets, smell of food in the air, music and dances everywhere… so much fun! Chinese New Year’s Eve is tonight for San Franciscans, so I am getting ready to make some dumplings at friend’s house. Wish everybody a very lucky year of the tiger — and check out my Chinese New Year tote bags, shirts and postcards here!

Muni is increasing the fare and cutting the service…

$70 for a fastpass? No wonder no artist can afford to live in San Francisco anymore! I designed these shirts for myself, but looks like I am not the only one who wants them :-)

I think I am going to wear these starting December 5th. Available here.

Just in time for the holidays! I had these SF alphabet postcards right next to my popular SF Map postcards at the Cole Valley Fair, and they were well received. Let me know if you don’t see your ‘hood on the website, and I will keep you in mind when I create more categories in the future.

San Francisco collective noun postcards

castrocole valleyjapantown

I was working on a collective noun project, and happen to came up with a new series of postcards. They are a bit “spicy” but here’s my famous quote: “Those who dare to laugh at themselves, have the courage to be themselves.”

They are available at www.SFlocal.net. Enjoy.

Happy New Year of the Golden Rat!

I felt like an inflated beach ball after last night’s huge dinner in my Chinese friend’s house. They cooked more than we could handle, but leftovers are good, as it symbolize abundance. Rat is a good sign in Chinese horoscope, but I bet any rat in the world doesn’t get nearly as much respect as their family members in Karni Mata Temple in India. When I was there last November, I was amazed when rats were fed milk and food, and they were treated like God. Indians believe the rat houses the soul of the Goddess Karni Mata. The temple is crowded with newly weds wishing to be blessed. I paid the camera fee and walked away with tons of photos. But I decided to take my socks off before I put my shoes back on at the entrance of the temple:)

Back to the Chinese New Year. There’s a spring festival celebration at the Chinese Cultural Center in San Francisco on Feb. 23 & 24. I designed their 2008 poster, which reflects the Chinese puzzle program of the center and their upcoming exhibitions. Like it?

is it up yet?

I am currently out of my town ( Cole Valley ) and wonder if my posters are in the merchants’ window yet. They should be up this coming week the latest. Went to the printer’s shop in SOMA, and here’s how posters were printed:

Heart of Cole Festival Poster

When CVIA (Cole Valley Improvement Association) first contacted me about doing the poster for this year’s fair, I said, I would not consider unless they guarantee having the poster on the street by the first week of September. Fortunately, they are a group of hard working, the poster responsible people, and we had a good working relationship. I sketched the artwork in June, but the artwork wasn’t done till I came back from my trip to China. The latest news is that the poster is being printed now. I hope you will like it, and will buy it / some too! They will be available on line at this website later on. Will keep you posted on the price, etc.

Oh, I did the T shirt design too.
Will upload a snapshot when the T shirts are made. My booth will be at the corner of the Cole and Parnassus, right in front of the Alpha Market. I will try to bring the original painting the poster is made from. ( I will also bring some other cool stuff, so come on by and say hello! )
